More Than Just a Standard
Free-mo is a modular model railroading standard designed to create realistic, flexible layouts that can grow and change with every setup.
Unlike traditional modular layouts built around fixed-size sections and predetermined track arrangements, Free-mo focuses primarily on the interfaces where modules connect. Between those connection points, modelers have considerable freedom to determine the length, shape, track arrangement, scenery, industries, and character of their modules.
The result is a railroad that can be assembled in an almost endless variety of configurations using modules built by different modelers and groups.
Why Free-mo?
Free-mo gives modelers the freedom to build the railroad they want while maintaining standardized connections that allow their modules to work with others.
Broad curves, realistic scenery, prototype-inspired track arrangements, and point-to-point layouts create an experience that looks and operates more like a real railroad.
A module built by one modeler can become part of a much larger railroad alongside modules from across the region—or across the country.
Free-mo works because modules built by different modelers follow a common set of standards at their connection points. The official Free-mo standards cover everything you need to know when designing and building a compatible module.

Gateway Free-mo is an informal group of HO-scale model railroaders in the St. Louis region who build, operate, and enjoy Free-mo modular railroading.
We're not a traditional model railroad club. There are no dues, elected officers, or group-owned equipment. Participation is simply about enjoying the hobby, sharing ideas, building modules, running trains, and creating larger railroads together.
Some participants bring multiple modules. Others help with setup and operations, or are just getting started with Free-mo.
You don't need to own a module to get involved. You will want to eventually though!
